Crane Services Limited (also known as CSL Roofing) was founded in 1996 by John Crane. Following a 15 year career in legal land surveying John found himself dissatisfied with the lack of value for professionalism in that industry. Due to this dissatisfaction he decided it was time to move to an industry that aligned more with his core values.

John entered the commercial construction world in the fall of 1991 working for Beck Construction at the Bull Arm site. Beck at the time was a local 25 year old building construction company in which J.W. Lindsay & Associates had a majority stake in.

John worked on many building construction projects for Beck over the next couple years as an assistant project manager with great success learning many valuable lessons along the way.

In 1992 John began working at Beck’s Mount Pearl office as a building salesman and estimator. At this point Beck were trying to better develop their roofing division to add more value to their building construction packages and they were looking for someone to captain this new undertaking. John jumped at the new challenge and became head of their roofing division specializing in Carlisle EPDM roofing applications.

In 1994, even after two successful years of managing Beck’s roofing division learning the ins and outs of low slope roofing Beck decided to close their doors due to financial problems with their main building construction processes.

In the spring of 1995 John moved on with another company Northern Industries Inc. forming their new roofing division. He held this position with Northern Industries until 1996 when they decided to part ways following a dismal year and the end of their current building lease.

On July 2, 1996 John incorporated and formed Crane Services Ltd. A new local roofing company specializing in the same low slope roofing solutions he became so familiar with along his journey. John’s goal was to extinguish the negative stigmas that surrounded the roofing industry at time by providing high quality roofing products combined with exceptional customer service.

Today Crane Services Ltd. still embodies these same values having developed specialized low slope roofing solutions that are optimized for the harsh climate experienced here in the great province of Newfoundland, serving St. John’s and the surround areas.
